Chapter 3, Episode 6 - Fall of the Warlord

Updated: May 17, 2021

The battle continued with ferocity. Ogres and orcs began rushing in from the east courtyard and great ogre bolt throwers came from the south courtyard to fire their giant bolts. The orcs fired upon Finder and Keeper atop the crumbling walls, and the ogres waded in to assail Farooq as he battled against the orc leader, Torban. Bronn battled one of the orc Blades of Ilneval while Nash exchanged fire with the bolt throwers to the south.

Keeper assailed the ogres with mind spikes and Finder blasted repeated bolts of energy down upon his foes. Farooq piled on huge hits against Torban but the orc leader kept fighting on and on, knocking Farooq to his knees more than once. The Eye of Gruumsh who was there, disengaged and went out the collapsed wall on the front of the fortification, never to be seen again. Nash brought down one of the bolt throwers and began working on the second one. Bronn moved to cast cures upon Farooq to keep him in the fight and Finder cast healing spells when needed to good effect.

Nash was rushed by the Blade of Ilneval while he was prone and took some hits but managed to take him down. Farooq struggled under the onslaught of 2 ogres and the orc war chief, but finally his attacks got through the defenses of Torban and he brought him down. A cry went out amongst the remaining forces that Torban was defeated and over the next few moments the remaining enemies fled into the night. An orc, the Eye of Gruumsh, and one bolt thrower managed to escape into the early darkness of the coming night.

The PCs healed up a bit and got some rest before exploring the chapel proper. Treasure was gathered from the fallen and Torban's dead body was strung up over the front gate as a warning to any orcs that should return. They carefully entered the chapel and searched the main area and the two wings of the vaulted building. They went through a set of double doors on the far side of the chapel and saw a room with an old altar in it. Skeletal remains lay upon the dusty floor near the altar and a disturbance in the dust showed that someone had moved through this room recently.

They found the orc war chief's treasure stash hidden behind the altar and gathered it up. Checking the altar for anything interesting, Farooq was given a vision of his consciousness flying up out of the ruins to rush across the countryside towards the highest peak of the Sword Mountains and there, laying upon the roof of a ruined fortress was a huge sleeping white dragon. After a few moments, the vision reversed and sent him back to his body.

Finder could tell that the Altar of Savras was giving off a strong sense of divination magic. No one else could replicate this vision by touching the altar, but further investigation revealed that the altar could roll slightly to reveal a hollowed depression beneath it, holding a small wooden coffer. Inside was some money and a magical key that had a chance to open any lock it was put into.

They spent some time going through their newfound treasure and made plans for how to set up their defenses to await the return of the orc assault, that Torban had sent out to Conyberry. Once that group realized that the PCs were not at Conyberry, they would return to their base and that should only take 2 hours or so at best, depending on how long they remained to investigate Conyberry. The PCs decided that they would remain inside the chapel and see what the orcs did when they returned.
